A lavish - and suitably monumental - collection of images of Egyptian art and architecture: the illustrations range from superb full-colour plates to informative maps and charts; thirteen chapters are written in a wonderfully broad, even lyrical vein, while the fourty-four archaeological sites are meticulously described; photographs include temples, tombs and building complexes, sculptures large and small, jewelry, and objects of daily or ritual utility. The artistic, later achievements of Roman and Christian Egypt, rarely included in books on Egyptian art, are discussed and illustrated as a proper part of the cultural context.
