This is something very special, it’s an absolutely stunning 1950\'s industrial task light. This was made by the D & G lighting company. The quality of D & G lights is outstanding. This is borne out with the fact that in many cases the lights have outlasted the buildings and machinery that they were designed for ! This light would have most likely been in an engineering shop and used to light a piece of equipment like a lathe or a machine press. A real piece of British history !!.
Now a little about the restoration....
We have restored a couple of similar lights in the past and they are usually a quick restoration with clear coat to maintain the finish and they are done. This was completely different!
When we acquired the lamp, it was a very ugly hand painted green (complete with runs) . As this was the case we decided on a full nut and bolt bare metal restoration. This involved dismantling the lamp completely. The first step was to have all of the metal parts sand blasted back to bare metal. We then powder coated them in stunning satin black. We re-used all of the original nuts and bolts. They were all high quality brass and look stunning now they have been cleaned and polished. The finishing touch was to rivet the original brass name plaque on with copper rivets. There are some minor twists in the arms and tiny dents in the shade, we decided to leave those in as they just add character to this 70 year old lamp.
We see many of these lamps spoiled by the base. We weren’t going to let that happen with this restoration so no old bits of scaffold board here. We made the base out of 40mm thick solid English oak. This was finely sanded and sealed with danish oil. For the final finish we applied three coats of Fiddes high quality English oak wax. The grain looks stunning and it complements the black of the lamp perfectly. It also has some awesome splits in the wood which add real character. For the electrification we used a solid brass bulb holder which has a switch built into it. We re-wired the lamp with period correct contrasting red braided cable. The lamp comes with a 1.5 mtr cable and a 3 pin UK plug. It is earthed and has been PAT tested for electrical safety. The lamp is supplied with a vintage style Edison filament bulb.
What’s cool about this lamp is that it’s multifunctional. It rotates from the base 180 deg’s. The lamp also concertinas from 50cm to 100cm in height. You can also angle the shade of the lamp left and right and up and down. This is the ultimate task lamp !! Perfect on a desk or table. It took over two weeks to restore and I know that whoever buys this is going to love it..
