Up for sale is a fantastic, highly collectible lot of 19 original vintage black-and-white railroad and municipal transit photographs. This unique mid-century railfan collection features exceptional historical data and provenance, making it a must-have for regional historians and railroad ephemera collectors.
• Multiple cards feature the original ink stamp and hand-written notes of prominent mid-century railfan photographer Frederick A. Bonke (Jersey City, N.J.).
• Features rare roster and action shots of the B&S Railroad fleet after being absorbed into the Baltimore & Ohio (B&O) system. Visual records of this specific short-line coal country infrastructure are incredibly difficult to find.
• Includes Class A-9 4-4-2 "Atlantic" high-speed passenger engines (Nos. 1484 & 1485) and Class E-60 / E-60A 2-8-0 "Consolidation" freight locomotives (Nos. 3100, 3138, and 3186).
• Cards feature precise hand-written historical data on the front margins or reverse sides, including action shots from Butler, PA (dated 1949), Seaboard Air Line local runs near Richmond, VA (dated 1948), and San Francisco, CA streetcars/trolleys shot by H.W. Ameling (dated Oct 1952).
These are authentic, original developer prints (silver halide/postcard backings) from the 1940s and 1950s. They are in very good vintage condition with sharp contrast, clear hand-lettering, and minimal corner wear or fading. Please review all photos carefully to examine the incredible details and historical notations on both sides.
The entire lot of 19 cards will be securely packed in a protective sleeve and shipped flat with rigid cardboard reinforcement to prevent bending.
