DESCRIPTION:

HENRY Q. NICHOLSON — MARYLAND MAGAZINE EDITOR & NEWSPAPER PUBLISHER . The letters themselves identify Henry Q. Nicholson of Reisterstown, Maryland as editor of the Maryland Monthly Magazine. That isn\'t just an inference: Leroy S. Boyd\'s March 10, 1907 letter specifically says Nicholson was mentioned in the Washington Times “as the Editor of the Maryland Monthly Magazine.”

I also found what appears very likely to be the same Henry Nicholson in a 1912 journalism trade publication. His obituary describes him as a “prominent newspaper man” who had formerly been editor and owner of the Roanoke Daily Record and editor of the Roanoke Evening World.

Interesting original 1907 correspondence archive relating to Henry Q. Nicholson of Reisterstown, Maryland and the Maryland Monthly Magazine. The group consists of numerous handwritten letters and notes; the exact number has not been counted.

Several pieces are addressed to Mr. H. Q. Nicholson / Henry Q. Nicholson, Reisterstown, Maryland, and the correspondence provides a fascinating look at the practical work surrounding the Maryland Monthly Magazine: subscriptions, editorial material, articles, advertising, illustrations, catalogues, and correspondence with contributors and readers.

Especially notable is correspondence from Leroy S. Boyd, writing from 312 C Street NW, Washington, D.C. In a March 10, 1907 letter, Boyd tells Nicholson that the Washington Times mentioned him as editor of the Maryland Monthly Magazine and requests a copy. Another Boyd letter dated June 12, 1907 sends payment for a subscription through July 1908.

Other visible correspondence includes:

  • A writer soliciting an interview concerning an advertisement in American Today
  • A letter from The Hannah More Academy, Reisterstown, Maryland, concerning members of a music committee
  • Letters discussing advertisements, illustrations, catalogues, price lists and the costs of printing or publishing material
  • Personal correspondence concerning illness, family matters and everyday affairs
  • A December 24, 1907 note addressed to Nicholson from Hattie Reynolds of Sherwood Forest
  • Several lengthy multi-page letters concerning advertising merchandise and illustrated catalogue material

The correspondence is particularly appealing because it appears to preserve part of the working correspondence of an early-20th-century Maryland magazine editor, rather than simply unrelated personal letters. The Washington, D.C., Reisterstown, Baltimore-area and Virginia connections add regional interest.

Dates visible are primarily 1907, with correspondence spanning different months of the year.

Original handwritten period material. Various sizes and papers. Expected age toning, folds from mailing/storage, edge wear, small tears, creases, stains and other handling wear are present. Some sheets have heavier folds or edge damage. Please examine all photographs carefully for contents and condition.

A strong research lot for collectors of Maryland history, Reisterstown, early magazine publishing, journalism, printing, advertising, literary correspondence, genealogy, or manuscript ephemera.

Authentic period piece related to family, historyor local heritage - well-suited for historical collections, genealogical /genealogy research, or museum acquisition.Vintage or Antique.
