Original pre-WWII ocean liner dinner menu from the S.S. Deutschland, operated by the Hamburg-Amerika Linie (Hamburg America Line/HAPAG).
Dated Tuesday, October 19, 1937.
The menu is beautifully printed in both English and German, with the full dinner selections presented side by side. The meal included melon cocktail, cream of squab Fontainebleau, boiled halibut, poularde Toulouse style, glazed leg of lamb Westmoreland, desserts, cheeses, fruit, coffee and tea.
The front features a period photograph captioned “Mädchen aus der Umgebung von Marburg” and carries the Hamburg-Amerika Linie name and HAPAG emblem.
The back is particularly interesting, retaining the original Musik-Programm for the voyage, listing works by Suppé, Rossini, Dvořák and Ketèlbey. It is identified at the bottom as part of the “Deutsches Brauchtum / Pictorial Series: German National Customs.”
Approximately 6 x 10 inches based on the ruler shown in the photographs.
An attractive original piece of pre-WWII German ocean liner and HAPAG maritime ephemera, particularly desirable with its exact 1937 date, bilingual dinner menu and surviving musical program.
