SEE PHOTO(s) - Lot of two (2) COMPLETE ORIGINALNEWSPAPERs,theNY Sun datedNov 21 and 22, 1917.These 2 original newspapers contain front page headings and news coverage of the British Army led by General Edmund Allenby on their way to capturethe city of JERUSALEM from the Ottoman Empire.

TheBattle of Jerusalemalso known as theFall of Jerusalemoccurred during theBritish Empire\'s \"Jerusalem Operations\" against theOttoman Empire, inWorld War I, when fighting for the city developed from 17 November, continuing after the surrender until 30 December 1917, to secure the final objective of theSouthern Palestine Offensiveduring theSinai and Palestine Campaignof World War I. BeforeJerusalemcould be secured, two battles were recognized by the British as being fought in theJudean Hillsto the north and east of theHebron–Junction Station line. These were theBattle of Nebi Samwillfrom 17 to 24 November and the Defense of Jerusalem from 26 to 30 December 1917. They also recognized within these Jerusalem Operations, the successful second attempt on 21 and 22 December 1917 to advance across the Nahr el Auja, as theBattle of Jaffa, although Jaffa had been occupied as a consequence of the Battle of Mughar Ridge on 16 November.

This series of battles was successfully fought by the British Empire\'sXX Corps,XXI Corps, and theDesert Mounted Corpsagainst strong opposition from theYildirim Army Group\'sSeventh Armyin the Judean Hills and theEighth Armynorth of Jaffa on the Mediterranean coast. The loss of Jaffa and Jerusalem, together with the loss of 50mi of territory during theEgyptian Expeditionary Force(EEF) advance fromGaza, after the capture ofBeersheba,Gaza,Hareira and Sheria,Tel el Khuweilfeand theBattle of Mughar Ridge, constituted a grave setback for theOttoman Armyand the Ottoman Empire.

As a result of these victories, the British Empire forces captured Jerusalem and established a new strategically strong fortified line. This line ran from well to the north of Jaffa on the maritime plain, across the Judean Hills toBirehnorth of Jerusalem, and continued eastwards of the Mount of Olives. With the capture of the road fromBeershebato Jerusalem via Hebron and Bethlehem, together with substantial Ottoman territory south of Jerusalem, the city was secured. On 11 December, GeneralEdmund Allenbyentered theOld Cityon foot through theJaffa Gateinstead of horse or vehicles to show respect for the holy city. He was the first Christian in many centuries to control Jerusalem, a city held holy by three great religions. Theprime minister of the United Kingdom,David Lloyd George, described the capture as \"a Christmas present for the British people\". The battle was a great morale boost for the British Empire

General Edmund Allenby led British forces to capture Jerusalem from the Ottoman Empire in December 1917, marking the end of over 400 years of Ottoman rule. Ottoman troops withdrew on December 8, 1917. Allenby made a symbolic, low-key entry into the city on foot through the Jaffa Gate on December 11, 1917, to show respect for its religious significance.

Key Details of the Campaign

Strategic Shift:Upon taking command in June 1917, Allenby revitalized the Palestine Campaign by moving headquarters closer to the front lines and shifting away from the failed frontal assaults of his predecessor.

Decisive Victories:The advance was secured by victories at Beersheba (October 31, 1917) and the Third Battle of Gaza (November 1917), which outflanked Ottoman defenses and opened the road to Jerusalem.

Symbolic Entry:Allenby’s entrance on December 11 was intentionally understated. He walked to avoid the appearance of a conqueror, contrasting with Kaiser Wilhelm II, who had entered on horseback in 1898.

Proclamation:Upon entering, Allenby declared martial law and issued a proclamation guaranteeing the protection of holy sites and freedom of worship for all religious groups.

Political Context:The capture was highly significant for the British war effort. However, it occurred amid complex and often contradictory British wartime promises to various groups, including the Balfour Declaration and commitments regarding Arab self-rule and the Sykes-Picot Agreement
