A Set of 11 Vintage Pycnometers ( specific gravity bottles) Range 1cc to 50cc: $55.00
This set is a mixed origin group of pycnometers ranging in size from a rare 1cc through to 50 cc. There are Two 50 cc; Five 25 cc; Two 10 cc; One 2 cc; and One 1 cc. The cc volume descriptor on the bottles varies according to origin and date of manufacture and can be either ml, GRAMM, Grammes, cc, or...as on one of the 50cc bottles...ccM. The M here signifies a German calibration confirmation; M for \"Messgerat\" (with an umlaut over the a, I believe). This 50ccM bottle along with a couple of others has tiny bubbles (known as seeds) in the glass and was likely made between 1890 and 1920 before more modern refining methods led to seed free glass. These bottles are of precise volume when stoppered and the liquid being measured has exited the bottle through the capillary in the ground glass stopper. The stopper for this type of bottle was typically matched to the bottle and both etched with a common number to ensure they were always mated. Eight of the bottles are so matched. Some bottles are clearly German in origin and are so marked, others will be from UK, France or the USA.
