DescriptionThis is a rare surviving set of Japanese patent medicine ephemera from 1906, produced immediately after the Russo-Japanese War.The product was called “Senshotan,” literally meaning “Victory Pill.”More than simply an old medicine package, this piece reflects the atmosphere of Meiji-era Japan in the aftermath of the war.The original printed instruction sheet features military and patriotic imagery, together with references to official approval and military medical authority. It includes the name of Army Second-Class Medical Officer Junzo Hashii and an approval seal associated with Hyogo Prefectural Governor Ichizo Hattori, dated 1906.Especially interesting is the way the product was connected with support for servicemen, military families, and bereaved families of those who died from wounds or illness.This makes the set an unusual historical record of the intersection between:medicine, commerce, patriotism, military culture, and social relief in early 20th-century Japan.The manufacturer and seller was Nakanishi Hoendo, located in Kobe.The set includes the detailed original printed leaflet together with six surviving period paper medicine packets.
