Antique 1929 Georgetown University Foreign Service Diploma Latin
A vintage Georgetown University diploma dated 1929, hand lettered entirely in Latin calligraphy.
Founded in 1919 by Father Edmund A. Walsh, the Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University is the oldest and premier school of international affairs in the United States, predating the formal U.S. Foreign Service by six years.
The degree reads Baccalaureatum in Officiis Transmarinis, a Bachelor's degree in Foreign Service, issued through the Georgetown School of Foreign Service.
The graduate is named on the document as Arthur Merriam Ryhn.
The diploma is signed by university president Coleman Nevils, S.J., who led Georgetown from 1928 to 1935.
Also signing is James Brown Scott, who held the chair of international law at the Georgetown School of Foreign Service from 1921 to 1940 and later served as president of the American Society of International Law.
