Estimated Age
This flag was acquired as part of a single, matching collection of flags. Every flag in this specific lot features the exact same dimensions, material construction, and manufacturer size stamp. Several of the companion flags from this same collection are firmly dated to the 1930s, leading us to believe this flag dates back to the 1930s era as well.
The Flag Size Scale Explained
Historically, European militaries and government departments did not measure flags in random inches. Instead, they manufactured them according to a standardized, regulated table of sizes.
The "2" Stamp: Refers to the specific position on that official manufacturing size table.
The Dimensions (15.5" x 24"): This perfectly matches a standard 2:3 aspect ratio commonly scaled down for small-format military use.
Military & Naval Use Case
The presence of the royal crown and Savoy shield combined with this specific size tells a clear story. Rather than massive capital warships (which flew giant ensigns), a size "2" crowned flag of this smaller scale was primarily utilized for two military purposes:
Small Naval Craft (Regia Marina): This size is highly consistent with flags flown on the stern or masts of smaller WWII-era naval vessels, such as submarines, torpedo boats, and MAS motor torpedo boats.
Military Vehicles & Command Posts: Because this flag belongs to a lot of identical size-2 flags, there is a strong possibility these were part of a tactical set used as military vehicle flags (mounted on command cars) or as headquarters/field command post flags for official state and military representatives
Size: 15 x 24”
