This antique button mold has a convex face marked by circular lathe lines and a dark, weathered surface. The reverse is flat, with a hand-pierced eyelet at the center.
• Size: Approximately 2 inches (50 mm) in diameter and 3 mm thick.
• Material: Natural, unvarnished hardwood, hand-turned.
• Condition: The wood has darkened with age to a rich chestnut color. A darker stain near the upper rim and softened edges reflect its long storage and use.
This hand-turned button mold is believed to date from the 1860s to the 1890s. Before plastic and aluminum buttons became common, haberdashers and woodworkers shaped hardwood blanks on foot-powered lathes. Dressmakers covered the domed wooden cores with wool, silk, or velvet, then stitched the fabric through the center eyelet to create buttons for coats, cloaks, and uniforms.
Collection and UseWith its dark patina and visible lathe marks, this mold offers a glimpse of traditional garment making. It would suit a collection of antique haberdashery or serve as a focal element in a jewelry design.
