Description
Exceptional antique Chinese rosewood jewelry or scholar\'s trinket box, dating approximately to the late Qing Dynasty through Early Republic period, circa 1890sā1930s. Beautifully constructed from dense, richly toned hardwood, this substantial box combines traditional Chinese symbolism with impressive old-world cabinetmaking.
Hand-Cut Dovetail Construction
The box features visible hand-cut dovetail joints at the lower corners, demonstrating the traditional interlocking joinery used by skilled cabinetmakers. The thick wood panels have developed a wonderful deep reddish-brown patina and surface oxidation from age.
The wood appears consistent with the family of dense Chinese hardwoods commonly referred to as hongmu or rosewood. Without wood testing, however, I would avoid guaranteeing a specific rosewood species.
Carved Shou Longevity Medallion
The lid is decorated with a beautiful circular openwork Shou medallion, one of the most recognizable symbols in traditional Chinese decorative arts. The Shou character represents longevity and frequently appears on furnishings and personal objects intended to convey wishes for a long and prosperous life.
The traditional hardware further enhances the box, including a decorative wrap-around front plate, substantial bar-style latch, internal barrel-style hinges, and lid-stop brackets.
Original-Style Red Silk Interior
Opening the box reveals a striking red silk jacquard-lined interior with a compartmentalized arrangement designed for jewelry and treasured personal objects.
The interior includes:
- Structured ring or ornament rolls
- Large central storage compartment
- Vibrant red textile lining
- Repeating traditional longevity-inspired motifs
The contrast between the richly patinated dark wood and brilliant red interior gives this box an especially impressive presentation.
Measurements ā Approximate
- Length: 10 inches
- Width: 4 inches
- Height: 3 inches
Condition
Good antique condition with expected surface wear, patina, oxidation, minor scratches, and age-related characteristics consistent with an old handcrafted wooden box. The historic textile interior may also show age-related wear or discoloration.
I would not refinish or aggressively polish the wood or hardware, as the naturally aged surfaces are an important part of the box\'s character and collector appeal.
Please examine all photos carefully for the exact condition, dovetail construction, hardware, carving, interior fabric, and any age-related imperfections.
Collector\'s Note
Several details make this box particularly interesting to collectors: the hand-cut dovetail joinery, heavy hardwood construction, traditional Shou longevity symbolism, period-style metal hardware, and elaborate red textile interior.
Chinese jewelry and scholar\'s boxes from the late Qing and early Republic periods were made in a range of hardwoods and quality levels. Examples retaining their decorative hardware and textile-lined interiors can be especially appealing as both functional antiques and examples of traditional Chinese craftsmanship.
