Beautiful early 20th-century sterling silver vanity hand mirror featuring an unusually detailed European street-market scene beneath a glossy decorative surface. The octagonal silver frame is marked .925 along with a GS sponsor/importer mark attributed to George Stockwell / Stockwell & Co. and a British import assay mark. Stockwell was a London-registered importer/sponsor of Continental silver objects during the early 20th century. The front depicts a woman carrying a basket through a European street scene with figures, architecture and animals in the background. The reverse holds a beveled mirror, while the geometric openwork handle gives the piece an elegant period appearance. The decorative scene appears to be enamel or a related painted/decorative technique; the exact method has not been independently confirmed.A wonderful antique vanity collectible and an appealing example of early imported sterling silver decorative work.Brand/Maker: George Stockwell / Stockwell & Co.
