ANTIQUE JAPANESE NATURAL INDIGO-DYED COTTON FABRIC PANEL - 3-HABA AIZOME MUJI (TAISHO TO SHOWA ERA)⑪
An extraordinary Japanese antique plain cotton fabric panel (無地木綿 / Muji Momen), naturally indigo-dyed (本藍染め / Hon-Aizome) and dating from the Taisho to early Showa period (early to mid-20th century). Featuring a rare, large-scale 3-panel structure (三巾 / 3-haba) hand-sewn together, this expansive panel measures approximately 88 cm x 204 cm (34.6 in x 80.3 in).
[VISUAL CHARACTER & UNIQUE CONSTRUCTION]- Natural Indigo Fading (Aizome / 藍染め): Dyed using traditional plant-based indigo, the fabric displays a rich spectrum of soft sky-blue to medium indigo tones, showing organic color shading (Abrash) created over decades of historic use.- Corner Reinforcements: Features deep indigo triangular reinforcement patches sewn into the corners, highlighting the thoughtful domestic craftsmanship of traditional Japan.- Distressed Vintage Texture: The panel incorporates an authentic vertical seam split/slit along part of the inner join, along with authentic worn holes and raw frayed edges, giving it an undeniable "Boro" aesthetic.
[HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE & THE SPIRIT OF AIZOME]In traditional rural Japan, hand-dyed indigo cotton was an essential companion to daily life. Highly celebrated internationally as "Japan Blue," natural indigo was praised for its aesthetic elegance as well as its functional properties—strengthening natural cotton fibers, repelling insects, and serving as a natural antibacterial shield.
Large 3-panel fabrics were historically utilized as futon covers (Futonji), room divider curtains (Noren), or protective wrapping sheets. As textiles wore out, households repurposed these large panels for Sashiko embroidery, visible mending, or layer-by-layer Boro patching.
