The ornate gilded-metal stand contains a revolving, double-sided devotional medallion beneath clear domed covers. One side depicts the Immaculate Heart of Mary, while the reverse shows Saint Joseph holding the Christ Child. The center spins freely within its circular frame, allowing either sacred image to face forward.
A round magnet recessed into the underside originally secured the shrine to the steel dashboard of an automobile. During the 1950s and 1960s, small dashboard saints, crosses and devotional images were popular among Catholic motorists, serving as visible reminders to pray for protection during travel.
