This exceptional antique Europeanhandwoven linen tablecloth dates to approximately 1890–1915. It’s beautifullyfinished on all 4 sides with deep handmade floral crochet lace. It’s much moreinteresting and rare than other linen cloths of the period, and the conditionis fantastic.
The substantial cream or off-white linen has awonderful geometric weave with a textured waffle effect. The fabric has theirregular character and weight associated with early hand-loomed householdlinen.
The pieced construction shows the handmadenature of the textile. The linen body was assembled from two differentloom-width panels, approximately 38" and 19" wide, joined with ahand-stitched off-center lengthwise seam.
All four sides are finished with approximately5½" of elaborate hand-crocheted lace. Large dimensional floral medallionsor rosettes hang from an openwork crocheted border, creating a deeply scallopededge. Individual medallions are approximately 4½–5" across. The raisedfloral work looks like Irish crochet-style lace of the period.
This was probably made in Europe but the exactorigin is unknown.
The heavy linen body measures approximately57" x 72", excluding the lace. The crochet extends approximately5½" beyond the linen on all four sides, giving an approximate overall sizeof 68" x 83" when fully extended.
In excellent antique condition. The cloth isremarkably well preserved, including the extensive handmade crochet edging. There are only a couple of tiny age spots and minor signs consistent withantique use. No significant staining or damage noted. Freshly laundered andready to use.
