Up for sale is an incredible, highly collectible piece of mid-century North Carolina newspaper history. This is a genuine, thick wood-mounted metal printing plate (photoengraving block) used during the hot-metal press era to print production copies of the February 19, 1959 edition of the Watauga Democrat newspaper in Boone, NC.
Historical Background:
The beautifully preserved metal surface features a crisp image of three local individuals—historically identified as Judy Greer, James Hadden, and Raymond Smith—making nitric acid in a chemistry class. This specific class took place inside the laboratory high school located on the campus of the Appalachian State Teachers College (now Appalachian State University / ASU).
Item Characteristics:
As a true vintage letterpress relic, the image and the detailed periodic table in the background are chemically etched into the metal face in reverse (mirror image). Because it remains securely mounted to its original, thick wood block, it stands completely upright on its own. This makes it an outstanding, hassle-free display piece for a desk, bookshelf, or historical collection.
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition with sharp, prominent etched details and a wonderful aged patina. The wood block backing is sturdy, solid, and holds the metal plate securely. Shows authentic pressroom character without any major damage that obscures the image. Please review the photos carefully for exact cosmetic condition.
Perfect for:
• Appalachian State University (ASU) alumni and High Country historians.
• Collectors of printing memorabilia, letterpress blocks, and industrial antiques.
• Unique mid-century scientific or industrial decor.
