CIVIL WAR Abraham Lincoln CDV Photo O-92 Phila. Photographic Co. Feb. 9, 1864
Subject:President Abraham Lincoln (16th President of the United States)
Photo Classification:Ostendorf O-92(vignetted bust-up variant). This iconic portrait was originally taken from life by photographerAnthony Bergerat Mathew Brady's Washington, D.C. studio onFebruary 9, 1864. The likeness famously serves as the foundation for the engraving featured on the U.S. Five Dollar Bill.
Format:Carte-de-Visite (CDV)— a 19th-century albumen photograph mounted to a heavy cardboard backing.
Publisher & Historical Context
Backmark:Features a clear, distinct circular stamp for thePhilada Photographic Co.(Philadelphia Photographic Co.), located at730 Chestnut St., Philadelphia.
Production Era:Circa 1865–1866. Produced during the Civil War era and immediate post-assassination period. This regional studio produced these by re-photographing an existing Berger print to supply the national demand.
Tax Stamp Note:The card lacks a physical paper revenue stamp on the reverse. This indicates the card either bypassed the loosely enforced Civil War luxury tax during production or the brittle 19th-century adhesive flaked off cleanly over the last 160+ years.
Condition Report
Mount Modifications:The corners of the cardboard mount have been manuallyclipped. This is a classic indication of authentic 19th-century album preservation, as owners frequently trimmed the corners to help slide the cards into tight CDV photo-album slots at the time.
Surface & Visuals:Exhibits honest period aging, mild toning, and subtle spotting/foxing characteristic of 160+ year old paper ephemera. The backmark remains sharp, bold, and fully legible.
