About the author Satoshi Okawa. Born in Yokohama in 1946. Graduated from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University in 1969 and joined Komatsu Ltd. He then worked at the Technical Research Centre, the Engine Development Centre, the Head Office Product Development Office, the Construction Equipment Research Centre, the Systems Development Centre and the Research Division, among others. He worked on the improvement and development of the engines, automatic transmissions, hydraulic equipment and the devices, parts and materials for working equipment used in all construction machinery, and on research and development of fuels and lubricating oils. He was also involved in developing a special hydraulic excavator running on fire-resistant lubricating oil. Alongside this research and development he has studied the history of the development of construction machinery to the present day. He left Komatsu in 2008. From 2014, as a researcher at the Graduate School of System Design and Management, Keio University, he has carried out research describing the operation of construction machinery in the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) to analyse problems. In September 2019 he received a doctorate (Systems Engineering) from the same university for his thesis \"Countermeasures against failures caused by lubricating oils in the drive systems of construction machinery — a reconsideration from a systems engineering approach.\" He is currently a member of the editorial committee for the \"Construction Machinery Handbook\" of the Japan Construction Machinery and Construction Association, and has served as the writer of its \"Progress of Construction Mechanisation\" section.
