An outstanding Southern Europe (Italy - Austria) Baroque 18th Century Corpus Christi (Body of Christ) wooden sculpture. An expressive carved wooden figure of Christ Crucified, distinguished by its elongated proportions, refined anatomical modelling and deeply contemplative expression. Christ is depicted with his head inclined forward, his eyes lowered and his arms raised in a dramatic crucifixion pose. His slender body is sensitively articulated through the pronounced ribcage, defined musculature and deeply carved abdominal contours. The carefully rendered hair and beard frame a solemn, introspective face, conveying the suffering and spiritual dignity of the Passion. A richly folded perizonium, secured by a finely carved rope-like girdle, encircles the hips. The angular folds and flowing drapery introduce an elegant decorative rhythm to the otherwise restrained composition. The sculpture displays the expressive religious character and anatomical stylisation associated with Southern European Baroque devotional carving. Originally intended for mounting upon a crucifix, the figure is now presented independently on a discreet contemporary metal stand, allowing its sculptural qualities to be appreciated in the round.
