Antique Orientalist print titled "Les Grandes Dunes" (or Au milieu des grandes dunes). It is an early 20th-century héliogravure (photogravure) originally produced by the famous photographic studio of Lehnert & Landrock.
The studio was founded by the Austrian photographer Rudolf Franz Lehnert and the German publisher Ernst Heinrich Landrock. They operated primarily out of Tunis and Cairo between 1904 and 1930.
Lehnert took the photographs during trips across North Africa, and Landrock handled the printing and business side. These specific wide desert prints were often hand-tinted or copper-plate etched to achieve their unique, soft pastel gradients.
The artwork captures an idealized view of the North African desert, depicting nomads with pack camels resting along the crest of massive sand dunes under a hazy blue-and-pink sky.
