Lot 7 Antique Victorian Singer Sewing Machine Trade Cards 1880s 1890s Advertising

Description

Wonderful estate-found collection of seven antique Victorian Singer Manufacturing Company advertising trade cards, dating primarily from the 1880s through 1890s.

The group includes a variety of colorful lithographed Singer advertising subjects, including:

* Bartholdi Statue / Statue of Liberty card, documented by the Smithsonian as an 1883 Singer trade card

* Singer Dorcas Society, documented as 1895, depicting young girls gathered around a Singer sewing machine

* “Romeo and Juliet” with a boy standing on a Singer treadle machine to kiss a girl, dating approximately 1880–1900

* Two similar “Mamma is going to make my new clothes on her New Singer” cards, documented in the 1880–1890 period

* A decorative fairy/flower-themed Singer advertising card

* An unusual die-cut portrait card with actual decorative thread/needlework embellishment

The reverse sides contain a variety of period Singer advertising, including references to Singer’s Automatic, Vibrator and Oscillator sewing machines, dealer and agent information, easy-payment advertising and information about the Bartholdi Statue.

The largest card measures approximately 3-1/2 inches wide by 6 inches high.

Estate-fresh condition with expected age wear including toning, staining, soiling, edge and corner wear, small creases, old pencil pricing/notations and other handling wear. The die-cut portrait retains old applied thread decoration with some wear. Please examine all photographs closely for the individual condition of each card.

Sold together as a lot of seven original antique advertising cards.

The Smithsonian’s Singer collection confirms several of these designs and dates the Statue of Liberty card to 1883, Dorcas Society to 1895, the package-carrying girl design to 1880–1890, and Romeo and Juliet broadly to 1880–1900.
