The meteorite began its journey to Earth as a result of a massive impact on the Moon’s surface - possibly forming one of the craters we see today. The force of that initial strike was sufficient to eject this and other rocks from the lunar surface at escape velocity, sending them into space. Eventually, this particular rock intersected with Earth’s orbit. As it entered the atmosphere, its surface was flash-heated to 2,800 degrees Fahrenheit before rapidly cooling in the frigid temperatures of the upper atmosphere. It then slowed to approximately 200 miles per hour during its final descent.
