ABOUT THIS SANTA
One picture circles the whole robe, and it takes the longest. On the front, one child kneels in the snow with arms stretched toward the snowman. The other reaches up to press its carrot nose into place. The wooden sled waits beside them, a cabin window glows behind, and a small red cardinal watches from a bare tree. Around the sides and back, more log cabins hung with icicles sit along rail fences and snowy pines. Pink and lavender shadows lie on the rolling hills. The sun sinks low in a sky that fades from gold to lavender, with the first stars out. The artist paints the whole scene by hand as the carved skirt curves around, which takes several days. On the back of his sack, a cardinal perches on a pine bough among red berries and shiny ornaments. The fur trim is carved in deep grooves, brown in the hollows and white on the ridges, and his mittens carry little white snowflakes. The staff lifts out and ends in a faceted red tip. At 9 inches tall, he fits a mantel, a shelf or a console table, in a house or a cabin. A twilight winter painted all the way around a carved red robe.
