Description:

Original vintage press photo of the Douglas DC-1, registration X223Y — the sole prototype ever built, and one of the most historically significant aircraft in commercial aviation. First flown July 1, 1933, the DC-1 was built for TWA and directly led to the Douglas DC-2 and DC-3, the aircraft that defined modern air travel. It set a transcontinental speed record in February 1934.

Only one DC-1 was ever built — it was sold in 1936, flew in the Spanish Civil War, and was destroyed in 1940. Surviving period photography of this specific aircraft is genuinely scarce.
