Panoramic View of Lucerne and the Lake with Swiss Alps, Switzerland Stereoview:
$28.00

Above Lucerne is a commanding height which compels one to forget an unmelodious name in the delights of a superb outlook over city, lake, and mountains. From the Gutsch we are able to enjoy this Swiss panorama. At our feet is a sea of roofs, with its countless white-caps in the form of diminutive dormer-windows. A real stream flows through them, disappearing on the left,—the Reuss, tranquil as the lake itself at this distance, but in reality a torrent of emerald. Rising near the St. Gothard pass, above Andermatt, it has carved its way through wild gorges down to the Lake of Lucerne at its south-eastern angle, and now at the city of Lucerne it becomes a river once more, to divide the town, and at last discharge its green waters into the Aar and so into the Rhine. The bridges are old, crooked, and picturesque, or new, convenient, and uninteresting. One of the medieval sort appears just above the roofs of a large barrack-building, facing upon this long street at our feet. Further upstream is the Kapellbrücke, which also crosses the river diagonally, and retains its ancient roof. It has a tower in the stream, known as the Wasserturm, but used as a safe place for dry archives. Last of all is the Seebrücke, which leads to a new and unduly gorgeous railway-station, a domed building seen over the towers of the Jesuits church. The latter dates from the 17th century. A large building adjoining was once a college of the same order, but now belongs to the government. On the quay, a little beyond the church is the theatre, while across the Reuss stands the Rathaus, or City Hall. But our view embraces still more than Lucerne, the most conspicuous mountain in the distance to the left is the Rigi. Its view is as widely known as any other in the Alps. To the right we can make out the narrows near Vitznau, where this most irregular lake is almost cut in two. Beyond are remote peaks in Canton Glaris.”
