Up for your consideration is a February 16, 1898, check made out to andsigned by Confederate Major General JOSEPH WHEELER. The check is preprinted “Sergeantof Arms, House of Representatives U.S.,” and is made out to Joe Wheeler andsigned by Joe Wheeler, thus the General signed the check twice. The connection between Joe Wheeler and the"Sergeant at Arms" stems from a well-known historical artifact: an 1898 House ofRepresentatives pay-slip. As a sitting congressman,Wheeler's official salary and travel expenses were processed and signed throughthe Office of the Sergeant at Arms, leading to the preservation of checks andvouchers that feature both his signature and the title of the office, makingthis check extremely rare.
