RPPC Vintage Postcard Southern Railway Diesel 6100 EMD 103 Demonstrator Real Photo
Southern Railway 6100 is one of the most significant diesel locomotives in railroading history. Built in March 1939 by the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC), it was originally the lead \"A\" cab unit of the famous EMC Demonstrator #103.
Before 1939, diesel engines were primarily used for switchers and passenger trains, while massive steam locomotives ruled heavy freight. EMC #103 was built as a four-unit, 5,400-horsepowerdiesel-electric set designed specifically to prove that diesels could handle demanding, long-haul freight service. The demonstrator set embarked on an historic 11-month, 83,000-mile tour across 20 railroads and 35 states. It easily outmatched standard steam power, proving that diesel locomotives were cheaper to operate, required less maintenance, and could deliver incredible reliability. This single tour triggered the rapid \"dieselization\" of the entire American railroad network, spelling the end of the steam era.
