Rare 1964 Original Science Research Photo - Symmetry & Interference Patterns: $22.22
Up for sale is a unique, original scientific photograph (c. 1964) featuring a grid of complex geometric and interference patterns. This specific imagery was famously featured on the cover ofScience magazine(Vol. 146, No. 3652, Dec. 25, 1964) to illustrate breakthrough research in wave symmetry and pattern formation.Provenance:This print was originally owned by a Project Manager at theNaval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD)during the period of this research. It represents a significant intersection of advanced naval mathematics and mid-century physics.Condition:[like new, in my opinion, but see photos and determine the condition and buy accordingly. This is a rare opportunity for collectors of scientific ephemera, physics history, or mid-century modern aesthetic art. Patterns produced by simultaneous initiation of a thin explosive disk at eight equidistant points. Picture sequence (at 600,000 frames per second) shows expansion, collisions, and interactions of detonation wave fronts. Symmetry of the wave patterns throughout the sequence is evidence of the remarkable uniformity in both initiation timing and detonation rate of the explosive. See page1635.
