Rare Antique Quarter Plate Union Case Ambrotype Daguerreotype Family Portrait: $595.00
The thermoplastic Union case features an elaborate historical scene depicting a colonial-era gentleman, horse, two women, and dog surrounded by ornate scrollwork. Based on the design elements, this appears to be a cataloged historical-scene Union case pattern, a type generally considered more desirable and less commonly encountered than standard floral or geometric Union case designs.
The case retains excellent detail throughout the relief work, with original hinges intact and a remarkably well-preserved burgundy velvet interior. The original brass mat and preserver remain present.
The cased photograph depicts a husband, wife, and child and remains housed in its original period case. The exact photographic process has not been professionally identified and may be a daguerreotype or ambrotype. Please review all photographs carefully and make your own determination regarding photographic process, age, and condition.
A highly attractive and increasingly difficult-to-find example of early American photography and Victorian-era Union case craftsmanship.
