Rare Original Circa late 1930s "Call for Philip Morris" Heavy Cardstock Store Advertising Sign
Measurements: Approximately 28 1/2" Tall x 21" Wide
Up for sale is an extraordinary, original vintage pre-WWII country store advertising sign featuring Johnny Roventini, the famous Philip Morris bellhop, calling out the iconic "Call for Philip Morris" slogan alongside a detailed period cigarette pack marked "Established — Over 90 Years."
I have dealt with vintage Philip Morris tobacciana and advertising signs for a very long time, and I have never encountered this specific oversized graphic printed on this caliber of heavy, rigid cardstock. Most surviving examples from this era are thin paper broadsides or smaller counter easel cards. To call an original survivor like this on thick board practically one-of-a-kind is accurate.
Provenance: Sourced directly from a longtime private advertising and tobacciana collection. It was preserved flat inside a display frame for decades, which is why it is in such remarkably good shape. (Sold unmounted/unframed).
Color & Display Appeal: The heavy litho colors remain exceptionally bold, clean, and vibrant. Johnny's face, smile, and white glove show crisp detail, with punchy deep reds across the oversized typography and uniform.
Condition Details: Authentic period condition throughout. Displays edge and corner rubbing, corner creasing, original top center/corner hanging holes from store display, and a vintage through-hole puncture in the lower-right jacket corner (all clearly documented in photos). Lower-left margin cleanly retains the original period imprint: "LITHO IN U.S.A."
Terms: Sold strictly AS-IS, no returns. Please inspect all photos closely, as they serve as the final visual description of this rare survivor.
Packaging & Shipping:
Due to the substantial 28.5" x 21" size and heavy cardstock construction, this piece cannot and will not be rolled. It will require an oversized, heavy-duty package fully reinforced between rigid sheets of thick foam board and layered corrugated boxing to ensure it arrives completely flat and undamaged. The calculated shipping cost directly reflects the oversized dimensional weight and heavy-duty protective materials required.
