Santa Maria, Flagship of Columbus, c1910, OH
This stereoview features a replica of the "Santa Maria, Flagship of Christopher Columbus," as indicated by the caption on the front bottom edge: "13729—The Santa Maria, Flagship of Christopher Columbus." The card also displays "155" at the top center. The left vertical edge reads, "Keystone View Company Manufacturers COPYRIGHTED MADE IN U. S. A. Publishers," while the right vertical edge lists publisher locations: "Meadville, Pa., New York, N. Y., Portland, Oregon, London, Eng., Sydney, Aus." The back of the card, labeled "P 155—(13729)," provides extensive educational text under the heading "FLAGSHIP OF CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS." The first paragraph details Christopher Columbus's early life, his desire to be a sailor, his studies of geography and navigation, and his belief in a round Earth. The second paragraph explains Columbus's search for funding, Queen Isabella's support, and the provision of three ships, with the Santa Maria being the largest. It concludes, "The ship you see is a copy of the Santa Maria. The Spanish people sent it to the American people." The text is copyrighted by "The Keystone View Company."
The scene depicts the large wooden sailing ship, a meticulously crafted replica of the Santa Maria, docked alongside a pier or wharf. The ship is shown from a slightly elevated perspective, showcasing its multi-masted rigging, bowsprit, and the distinctive lines of a 15th-century caravel. Several individuals are visible on the pier, observing the ship, and a few can be seen on the ship's deck, adding a sense of scale and public interest. The water surrounding the vessel appears calm, reflecting parts of the ship. The overall impression is one of a historical exhibit or attraction, bringing a piece of the Age of Discovery to the modern public, likely as part of an exposition or permanent display following Spain's gift of the replica to the American people.
There is no personal handwritten message typically found on postcards. However, a single handwritten number "6" is visible in the top right corner of the back of the card. The estimated era for this stereoview is the 1910s, based on the card's style, publisher, and the period of similar educational views.
