St. Louis City Hall Architecture & History
Constructed between 1890 and 1904 at an original cost of $1,650,000, the St. Louis City Hall was designed in the French Romanesque style. Its architecture was heavily inspired by the famous Hôtel de Ville in Paris, France. The building originally featured an ornate central spire and elaborate dormers, though some of these roof elements were removed in later decades for safety and maintenance reasons. The back of this postcard also highlights a unique piece of local history: the first mail ever carried by air in the United States left in a balloon from this very City Hall Square on July 1, 1859.
