The Pubat Airport Circle - 1959 - Pennsauken, New Jersey - Very Rare Side Logo – China Restaurant Mug
Offered is a very rare September of 1959 side logo 2-15/16" tall heavyweight vintage restaurant china mug made for "The Pub" restaurant that was (and still is today) located on Airport Circle in Pennsauken, New Jersey, in Camden County.
This mug was made in September of 1959 and would have been from the original pub restaurant. Just a short time later on March 31st, 1962, a fire broke out in one of the open charcoal pits while the restaurant was open with staff and guests present. Everyone was able to evacuate, but the restaurant was a total loss. However, it was rebuilt and remains today as one of Pennsauken's most popular and historic restaurants in operation still.
This is a very rare pattern that is seldom seen. It appears this pattern was ordered from Syracuse in 1955, this 1959 order, and possibly the last, in July of 1965 (post fire). It was also during the 1960's that there were a couple of other locations that opened for The Pub, but those eventually closed and only the original Pennsauken location remained.
The Pub opened in 1953 after three partners bought an existing smaller restaurant once called Neil Deighan’s on the same spot along Airport Circle, where state highways Route 130, 38 and 70 converge. At that time Central Airport operated on the opposite side of the circle, was still in operation, but was closed in April of 1957, which later, a shopping center was built on its location.Nothing remains Central Airport today except Airport Circle, which is where the Pub was and is located. This was also the first roundabout in the country when it was built at the north-west corner of where the airport stood.
When the second and new building was finished to replace the original one that had been destroyed, it was built to resemble a Tudor-stylemansion witha huge dining room that could seat upwards of 400+ persons. The large original landmark metal and neon industrial looking sign out front remained and is still standing today.
The pub became not only an important restaurant for the Pennsauken area, but also, guests would arrive from nearby Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Camden, New Jersey.
This mug / cup would have been used to serve hot coffee, hot tea, or other hot beverages to the guests in the restaurant and cocktail lounge area of the restaurant. It would have been used in connection with the Pub's hotel silver soldered - silver plate and glassware for actual table service. This is the heavyweight type steamship, lunch counter - lunch room, cafe, and railroad china.
