This figurine is a vintage carnival prize chalkware soldier from the 1930s to 1940s era.
History & Context
During the mid-20th century, particularly around the World War II era, these molded plaster and chalk figures were highly popular as midway game prizes at carnivals, fairs, and amusement parks. They were cheaply mass-produced, spray-painted or hand-painted with airbrushes, and featured various patriotic subjects—including sailors, pilots, WAACs, and soldiers like this one leaning against a patriotic column.
Condition & Characteristics
• Material: Plaster of Paris / Chalkware.
• Design: A military figure in dress uniform, wearing a peaked cap, standing in a saluting pose next to a classical column.
• Paint: Original cold-painted finish showing typical aging, paint loss, and flaking. Because chalkware is soft and porous, finding examples with perfectly preserved paint is rare.
