Vintage 1970s Arlington Trust Co "Green Machine" ATM Metal Sign 24x36 Methuen: $250.00
Up for sale is a rare and unusual piece of local banking and technological history: an original 24" x 36" metal interior sign from the Arlington Trust Company. This sign originally hung in the foyer of the Route 28 Methuen branch (historically the largest bank in Essex County at the time) around 1978. It was designed to announce the "Future Location of The Green Machine"—Arlington Trust's brand-new branding campaign for their incoming automated teller machines (ATMs).The Backstory / Corporate Lore: Back when ATMs were a revolutionary concept, banks rushed to brand them. However, Arlington Trust's grand rollout hit a major snag: shortly after printing and displaying these signs, the bank ran into serious trademark/copyright infringement challenges over the "Green Machine" moniker. Forced to scrap the branding campaign, the signs were swiftly pulled down and became entirely obsolete almost as fast as they went up—making survivors exceptionally scarce. (Adding to the history, the original bank building itself is long gone, having later been replaced by a local car wash.) Size: 24" x 36"Material: Metal interior sign with bold green lettering.Condition: Vintage used condition with authentic age wear appropriate for a salvaged bank interior piece.
