Beautiful large vintage Italian hand-painted ceramic/majolica soup tureen with matching ceramic ladle.
This is an impressive decorative serving piece featuring an ornate scalloped form on a raised pedestal base. It is extensively hand painted in warm shades of yellow, ochre, orange, brown and black over a creamy white ground.
The body features a striking long-tailed bird in flight surrounded by floral and foliate decoration. The domed lid is decorated with additional flowers and foliage and topped by a wonderful three-dimensional pear and leaf finial. The molded side handles, striped borders and coordinating hand-painted ceramic ladle complete the design.
The underside is hand marked “ITALY.” No other maker’s mark is present, so the specific Italian manufacturer is unknown.
A substantial and highly decorative piece that would make a beautiful centerpiece, display piece or addition to a collection of vintage Italian pottery.

Condition
Vintage pre-owned condition with extensive age-related glaze crazing throughout, visible on both the interior and exterior. Some areas of the crazing show age-related discoloration/staining.
The ceramic ladle has a small chip on the rim, clearly shown in the close-up photograph.
One of the molded leaves beside the pear finial has an area that appears to have sustained an old chip or other damage and shows evidence of possible previous paint touch-up/repair. This area is shown closely in the photographs.
There is additional normal surface wear, paint wear and signs of age/use. The underside/foot also shows expected age-related wear and soiling.
No cracks were observed during inspection.
Please examine all photographs carefully, particularly the close-up condition photographs, as they are considered part of the description.
