Up for sale is a beautiful, highly collectible pair of vintage mid-century hand-carved solid wood figural bookends depicting an indigenous man and woman from the Igorot Tribe of the Northern Philippines. Pictured is a seated man & woman Filipino folk art pair - 8” tall.
Masterfully hand-carved from a single piece of rich local hardwood (likely monkey pod or acacia), these figures feature incredible stylistic depth. Both are depicted in a proud, seated crouching posture. Note the amazing details, particularly the distinctive contrast in hair carvings—one figure showcasing a finely lined, smooth bun and the other a detailed cross-hatched grid pattern.
Dimensions: 8" Tall (Perfect, substantial shelf size)
Weight: Heavy, solid wood construction—perfect for holding up substantial book collections.
Condition: In good, vintage decorative condition with a gorgeous natural wood patina. Please note that solid wood naturally expands and contracts over time, resulting in structural character lines. Both figures have visible, natural aged stress cracks: One figure has a crack running from the base up the lower hip/back, and the other has a crack running through the lower ankle/foot support (fully documented in close-up photos). They still stand well and hold books beautifully, but are priced accordingly for their flaws. Sold strictly AS-IS.
Ships quickly and will be packed with extra care to ensure safe arrival. Perfect addition to any Mid-Century Modern, Tiki, or ethnographic art collection!
