This is a vintage desktop souvenir plaque celebrating the Pan Am Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet, sold at Tokyo International Airport, better known as Haneda, which was Pan Am\'s Tokyo base from 1947 until the airline moved to the new Narita airport in 1978. Pan Am launched the world\'s first 747 service on January 22, 1970, and this plaque dates from the years that followed, when the Jumbo Jet was the pride of the airline and Japan was one of its most important markets. The slogan on the plaque, \"Pan Am makes the going great\", is the advertising line Pan Am used at the turn of the 1970s, which places the piece firmly in the early Jumbo Jet era.
The design is a classic Japanese airport souvenir of the period: a gold-tone relief of a 747 climbing away with all four engines and a blue cheatline, set on a black panel with raised lettering reading BOEING 747 JUMBO JET, the slogan in script, and the blue Pan Am globe logo, framed by a red mat and a gold border on a wood-grain plaque. A gold nameplate below reads TOKYO International Airport, with TOKYO picked out in red. An easel leg on the back lets it stand on a desk or shelf.
Pieces like this were sold at the airport to travelers and visitors in the early 1970s and rarely survive with the relief, enamel logo and nameplate all intact, making it an attractive display item for Pan Am collectors, 747 enthusiasts and anyone with a connection to Haneda in the Jumbo Jet era.

The nameplate is a gold-tone metal plate fixed to the front. A plywood easel leg is attached to the back with two rivets and folds out for display. No maker\'s mark is present.
