Vintage Royal Crown Derby “Blue Mikado” Plate, Rare Gilt Edge 1948, England: $32.50
This is a Blue Mikado collectors plate produced by Royal Crown Derby. Based on the specific Roman numeral date cipher "XI" printed beneath the factory backstamp, this exact piece was manufactured in the year 1948.
Pattern History & DetailsThe Design: The Mikado pattern was originally created in 1894 by the company’s art director, Thomas Amos Reed. He drew inspiration from Eastern rice paper drawings to depict an intricate, sweeping Chinoiserie narrative across the ceramic surface.
The Story: The pattern visually illustrates chapters of an old romantic legend. It features distinct motifs like the "wandering sad-eyed lover," tall pagodas, winding rivers, and a bird perched in a tree branch.
The Variations: This plate stands out because it features a gilt (gold) rim, unlike the plain "No Trim" versions of the pattern which were heavily produced.
Excellent vintage condition without chips or cracks (see photos)
