Vintage San Carlos Apache Burden Basket Attributed to Helen Bonita – Heard Museum Provenance

Offered here is a substantial San Carlos Apache burden basket attributed to Helen Bonita (Helen Bonita Daley), accompanied by original provenance documentation from the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.

The accompanying 1988 correspondence identifies the basket as the work of Helen Bonita of San Carlos. Independent family research further connects Helen Bonita Daley to a San Carlos Apache basket-weaving family tradition. The basket was originally purchased through the Heard Museum and retains the original documentation, an increasingly uncommon feature among Native American baskets currently available on the secondary market.

This is a large display-size example measuring approximately 16 inches in diameter and approximately 9 to 10 inches deep. The basket features traditional coiled construction, a leather-wrapped rim, rawhide lacing, and long buckskin fringe terminating in numerous original hand-made metal tinklers.

One of the most fascinating aspects of this basket is the survival of legible printed text within many of the original tinklers. Examination of the metal reveals food-packaging and recipe language including references to "Bread," "Pie Crust," "Manteca Veg," "For Food," "Agriculture," and ZIP code 20250. These original inscriptions indicate that the tinklers were fashioned from repurposed USDA food-program packaging materials rather than commercially manufactured decorative cones. The surviving text provides a rare glimpse into the everyday materials available to the maker and remains an important part of the basket's history and authenticity.

The basket presents beautifully and displays exactly as one would hope from a documented San Carlos Apache example. The form, materials, construction methods, fringe treatment, and tinklers are all consistent with traditional Apache burden basket forms.

Condition:
Very good vintage condition overall. Structurally sound with expected age-related wear from age and handling. Original fringe, rawhide lacing, and hand-made tinklers remain present. Provenance paperwork from the Heard Museum is included. Please review all photographs carefully for complete condition details.

Approximate Measurements:
Diameter: 16 inches
Depth: 9-10 inches

A highly desirable Native American basket combining documented provenance, maker attribution, traditional construction, and remarkable surviving material history.
