Vtg 1940s Large Paper Mache Halloween Jack O Lantern Excellent Condition:
$550.00

I purchased this item, along with the other vintage paper mache pieces we currently have listed, in the Upper East Coast from a collector's estate sale and, among all of his vintage paper mache JOL, this was the largest.

Handmade in circa 1940, It measures approximately 7.5" in height, 10" across and 24" in circumference. It is in Excellent Vintage condition with very light wear overall. Please see all photos and watch our video so that you get a very clear idea of the condition and details of the piece. Very HARD TO FIND in this fantastic condition! Comes with original paper insert for the eyes, nose and teeth. NO deep scratches, holes, breaks or repairs. The metal handle might not be original to piece but works perfectly. If you are unfamiliar with the history of these pieces, we have included an excerpt from the web for your reference at the end of this listing. If you have anyquestions, please message us and we will promptly respond. All Halloween items will be shipped same day! The only day we cannot ship is Sunday. But,because of theholiday being so near, we feel same day shipping isappropriate. We will also include several battery powered tea lites, as because these are so delicate, an open flame is NOT recommended if you intend to illuminate theinside.

Will be packed with extra care in a box, and insured, for a safe arrival. If you would prefer speediershipping (priority, etc.) please let us know and we will make the necessary accommodations. Happy Halloween and thank you for viewing our collection!

Paper Mache Jack-O-Lantern in the USA - WWII Era (1930s–1940s)
  • Moving Production to the U.S.:Following World War I and World War ll, many of the US servicemen and women saw this style Jack-O-Lantern in Germany and duplicated the trend in the US leading up to the 1930s and 40s.
  • Egg-Crate Pulp & Sugar Rationing:During the early 1940s, World War II sugar rationing slowed down large-scale trick-or-treating traditions. People began to use used heavy egg-crate-style molded pulp to build sturdy, lightweight lanterns and candy containers (meant to hold nuts or treats).
  • Fire Hazards:Because real candles were frequently placed inside, many of these flammable paper creations burned or degraded over time. But many also survived!
