WWI 1915 German Ein Bombenerfolg
Satirical Aviation Postcard Postally Used
EAS Berlin 1635, Bayern 5pf, ALSENZ Postmark 1915DESCRIPTIONAn original WWI-era German postcard titled "Ein Bombenerfolg" ("A Bombing Success"), a wry piece of wartime trench humor showing a German officer strapped into a rigged basket seat suspended beneath an aircraft, gripping a pair of oversized bombs while smoke and shell bursts dot the trench lines far below.Published by E. A. Schwerdtfeger & Co. A.-G. of Berlin (card no. 1635, EAS monogram in the corner), a documented WWI-era publisher whose war postcards are held in institutional collections including the Wien Museum and the Deutsches Historisches Museum. This example is not a blank collector's copy sitting in an album, it actually traveled through the German postal system: franked with a 5pf green Bayern (Bavaria) definitive stamp tied by an ALSENZ postmark dated 1915, Alsenz being a small village in the Palatinate (Pfalz) region that was then part of the Kingdom of Bavaria, and carrying a handwritten period message in German cursive addressed to a Fräulein Cäcilie Boys. That genuine wartime use adds a real layer of history on top of the printed satire, a card that was actually written, stamped, and mailed during the war it pokes fun at. Scanned at 600dpi so every detail of the image, the stamp, and the postmark comes through clearly.Every effort is made for fact checking and provenance including background research through news and historical archives. Corners show light rounding with a touch of soft wear, no bent or creased corners. A couple of tiny light surface specks in the dark sky area of the image, visible on close inspection but not distracting. Even, mild toning to the card stock consistent with the period. Stamp and postmark are both clear and fully legible. The handwritten period message on the reverse is present and legible as period German cursive script. No tears, no creases through the printed image, and no writing or markings on the front.
