WWI US Army Photo Postcard Lot Camp Panorama Mule Soldiers Sgt Lee Rifles Card: $39.99
DESCRIPTION Five pieces of World War I-era American military photography, each one different: a board-mounted camp panorama of soldiers pitching tents in an open field camp; a thin silver photograph of mounted soldiers on mules, a white mule and its grinning rider front and center; a full-length portrait of a sergeant beside a horse-drawn wagon at an arid camp, identified in pencil on the back as \"Sgt. Harrison Lee\"; a hand-colored \"Cleaning Rifles\" postcard carrying a period pencil inscription, \"These are trying times.\"; and a small snapshot of a U.S. Navy vessel at a pier. Two honest unknowns, stated plainly. The sergeant\'s name is given exactly as written on the photograph\'s back; no service record has been tied to this image. And the Navy snapshot\'s back inscription is not fully legible — it has been read as \"U.S.S. Louisiana,\" as \"U.S.S. Swanson,\" and as \"U.S.S. Suisun\" — while the vessel\'s flat-deck silhouette does not clearly match any ship of those names and appears more consistent with an aircraft carrier. The ship is offered as unidentified; please judge it from the photographs. CONTENTS - Camp panorama — gelatin silver photograph mounted on board, approx. 6-7/8 x 4-7/8 in: soldiers pitching tents in an open field camp, horses and wagons behind them. Fair condition — see CONDITION.
- Mounted soldiers on mules — thin gelatin silver photograph, approx. 4-3/8 x 3-1/2 in. Partial blue photographer\'s stamp on the back, mostly illegible.
- Sergeant portrait — gelatin silver photograph, approx. 4-3/8 x 3-3/8 in: full-length in campaign hat beside a wagon wheel, camp buildings behind. The back is pencil-inscribed \"Sgt. Harrison Lee\" with the number \"572\"; an ink inscription along the top edge of the front is largely illegible (the word \"kiddo\" can be made out).
- \"Cleaning Rifles\" postcard — hand-colored printed postcard, approx. 5-1/2 x 3-3/8 in, © I.F.S., Illustrated Postal Card & Novelty Co., N.Y., no. 1860-17: soldiers cleaning rifles outside a barracks. Period pencil inscription across the top: \"These are trying times.\" Unused divided back.
- Navy vessel snapshot — gelatin silver snapshot, approx. 3-3/8 x 3 in: a warship at a pier, unidentified (see above), with a pencil inscription on the back as approx. 6-7/8 x 4-7/8 in; mule photograph approx. 4-3/8 x 3-1/2 in; sergeant portrait approx. 4-3/8 x 3-3/8 in; postcard approx. 5-1/2 x 3-3/8 in; ship snapshot approx. 3-3/8 x 3 in.CONDITION
Good overall for the lot, varying by piece. The camp panorama is FAIR: tears at the upper-left and lower-right corners, vertical cracks/splits at the top, a punched hole near the top center, staining including a large toned patch at upper right, and surface scuffs; its black board back shows album wear, surface loss and flaking, and an old tape strip — please do not attempt to remove the tape. The image itself remains complete and readable. The mule photograph is good overall, a thin silver print with light handling wear and gentle toning. The sergeant portrait is fair to good: a small cut at the upper-left corner, staining on the front, edge and handling wear, and a back with adhesive staining, black album-paper remnants, and foxing spots. The \"Cleaning Rifles\" postcard is Very Good, with some fading and corner and edge wear; the back is clean and unused. The ship snapshot is good, an inherently soft, distant image. Please examine closely for exact condition. SHIPPING & RETURNSFree US Shipping / 30 day returns - Must be returned in original condition.
