Antique Needlework Sampler Chloe Smith Dunstable, Massachusettes 1827
Beautiful framed sampler in excellent condition with nice subtle details presented under glass. Features a detailed tan diamond boarder design, first 2 lines include a large starburst pattern upper case alphabet, the next two lines feature a flowing style pattern of the upper case alphabet, the next line is a smaller starburst pattern in smaller font and the last line features the lower case alphabet and numbers. The lower register is inscribed \"Be wise mortals while you may, For time is swiftly flying, The careless ones who laugh today, Tomorrow may be dying.\" Signed to the right reads \"Chloe Smith\'s Sampler, Dunstable June 21st 1827. Framed measurements are approximately 8.5\" x 14.5\".
Chloe Smith was one of five children, her father, was Abijah Smith and her mother was Sarah (Brown) Smith. Abijah was an original member of the Universalist Society established in Dunstable on January 21, 1818. The population at the time was just around 600 and 2 years before the town established its first post office.
