Very old unmarked Washita arkansas stone in strop top box. Possibly Norton or Pike Lily White Washita. Actual item is pictured. Good box. Stone is 8 x 2 x 1-3/16 . It has some discoloring from dried oil.Arkansas stones vary greatly in how firmly the silica particles are compressed together and do NOT have a fixed "grit". The "softer" stones cut faster because the abrasive particles tend to come loose (which also makes the softer stones dish much more easily). With "harder" stones the particles tend to shear off which leads to glazing. Glazing makes the stone perform like a much finer stone than its particle size would suggest. There is also some variation in the size of the silica particles in arkansas stones. The older washita stones usually have larger particles and a more consistent particle size throughout the stone. This stone feels like it is probably midway between "hard" and "soft". Many more vintage stones on my other listings. I take packaging seriously. Shipping will be UPS - delivered to your house.
