Another Andrew Marks for your consideration!
I, of course, tested this pipe to make sure it smokes as good as his others ive had, have, and sold as I believe this man utilizes the very best treated briar, air curing his stock for over 25 years before using it to make his master works.
This is no different, he’s 7 for 7 by my own personal estimation across 40 years of different makes and I’m sure owners of his other pieces would agree with me. There is no finer smoking briar than that used in Andrew Marks’ pipes.
This is an extremely early piece in his catalogue, made just 3 years after he started, and the same year he received letters of lraise from great american pipe smoker and artist Norman Rockwell! He learned from some of the greats in Denmark in the late 60s, came back to the US and has been carving ever since. A freehand acorn at heart, fine 360 straight grain and fine peaks of plateau along the thick rim, birdseye on the heel, and flame grain along the shank. Its capacious chamber will burn down your favorite leaf with ease for over an hour!
There is some rim darkening as pictured, I left a light cake in the chamber. The stem has some lingering oxidation. I have no idea why the shank looks like it was burnt along one side, as the internals show no excessive wear outside of use.
