Little History

Prior to city-run ferries, 19th-century Staten Island steamboats were operated by private lines (including Cornelius Vanderbilt's early ferry operations) connecting Manhattan's Battery to Staten Island landings.Built in 1857 for the New York and Staten Island Ferry Company, the Southfield was a prominent side-wheel steam ferry operating across New York Harbor between Manhattan and Staten Island. Inlate 1861, shortly after E. & H.T. Anthony published this "Instantaneous" stereoview series, the Southfield was purchased by the U.S. Navy for service in the American Civil War, converted into an armed gunboat (USS Southfield), and eventually sunk in battle in North Carolina in 1864.
