FREMANTLE, [Arthur J. L.], Lieut.-Col. Three Months in the Southern States: April, June, 1863. Mobile, AL: S.H. Goetzel, 1864. 1st Confederate ed. 158pp. LACKING original wallpaper covers - the text on which just duplicated what is seen on the title page here so NO ACTUAL TEXT WAS LOST in the binding job; but otherwise complete.

Light wear; some moderate FOXING (not mildew) to covers, otherwise VG with very clean interior . . . Bound in ca. 1900 cloth binding with leather spine label (label shows some patina). Text printed on good quality rag paper that has evenly and moderately toned; small abrasion on the outside of front cover that MAY have been at one point a library marking . . . but it\'s NOT obtrusive and there are absolutely NO OTHER LIBRARY MARKINGS within the text or on the binding. (I looked carefully).

NO OTHER MOBILE ALABAMA CONFEDERATE IMPRINT EDITION OF THIS BOOK IS LISTED ON AS OF 8 SEPT., 2026

Neat PRIVATE OWNER bookplate on front pastedown: A Johnson White or perhaps just Johnson White of Virginia..

This important pro Confederate history & travel account is cited in many reference books including HOWES F-361, \"aa.\" P&W 5392. Confederate Hundred 33. In Tall Cotton 64. Very scarce. \"Fully deserving of its reputation as the best commentary on the wartime South by an English visitor\" Nevins I, p.91. \"This Englishman was in sympathy with the Confederacy but did not fail to record some uncomplimentary observations. He was much impressed by what he saw in Texas as shown by the large amount of attention he gave the Texans in his book. He had great admiration for the Confederate soldiers and spoke with respect of the Confederate leaders he met\" Coulter 175.
