Confectioners' Journal launched in Philadelphia in 1874 and billed itself as the oldest trade paper of its kind in the world, connecting candy manufacturers and suppliers with retailers across North America. It would run for seven more decades before merging into Candy Industry magazine in 1944.
This card catches that trade network in the act. W.T. Brunnell, a confectionery retailer in Ottawa, had seen Wilson & Co.'s advertisement in the Journal and wrote directly to Philadelphia asking for a price list, a routine but concrete example of a single trade publication linking small retailers across an international border in the 1880s.
The Journal's reach in the confectionery trade outlasted every business it once advertised. Even after its 1944 merger, its role as a foundational trade publication for the candy industry is still cited by the sector's modern successors.
